From 3 August 2026, the paper Italian identity card will no longer be accepted as a valid travel document, even if it is still within its printed expiry date. For security reasons and to comply with European standards, the paper identity card cannot be used for travel abroad or national flight check-in. To travel, passengers must hold a Electronic Identity Card (CIE) or a valid passport.
