Val Gardena
An original landmark in the 21st century
As a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, in today’s Val Gardena we look at the particularly spectacular mountain massifs of the Gruppo delle Odle, Gruppo del Cir, Sella massif and, of course, the unmistakable Sassolungo. Imagine what these eyewitnesses have seen and experienced. If only they could tell stories ... Well, they can, but in a different language that requires careful listening. After all, you can find fossils of sea creatures from prehistoric times here in summer, making the rock a time machine with which you can travel thousands of years into the past. “They are not the highest mountains in the world, nor the most difficult, but certainly the most beautiful mountains in the world,” as Reinhold Messner, arguably the most famous South Tyrolean, once raved about the Dolomites. Where once water and coral reefs dominated the ground, nowadays around 500 kilometres of connected ski slopes, 30 km of winter hiking trails and 115 kilometres of cross-country ski trails stretch across the valley in winter.
